Villa del Priorato di Malta or Magistral Villa is a complex of buildings high on the Aventine Hill in Rome and hosts today the Grand Priory of Rome and the embassy of the Order of Malta in Italy.
Originally a Palace owned by Alberico II it became in the Medieval era a fortified Benedictine monastery that finally passed to the Knights Templar because of its strategic position.
The present villa is the result of a restauration work carried out in the second half of the 1700’s by the engraver Giovanni Battista Piranesi under request of Cardinal Rezzonico. Piranesi realized the decorative entrance fountain, the rococo small square, the Church of St Mary of the Priory as well as the well-known “St. Peter through the key hole”.
If you want to enjoy a stunning view of St. Peter’s Dome under a very unusual prospective we suggest you to put your eye on the hole of the gate of the Priory of the Knights of Malta.
Discover this “must visit” secret place in Rome rich in history, esoterism and symbols related to the Masonry.
