Elizabeth Doub: My Viterbese carnival

On Saturday March 2nd, the annual carnivale celebration took place in Viterbo. Carnivale, a tradition celebrated all throughout Italy around Mardi Gras and before lent, Viterbo’s did not disappoint. The celebration took place in the form of a parade. People lined the streets, many dressed in costumes and throwing confetti as the parade moved through the town. The parade consisted of floats, choreographed dances, and people of all ages dressed in elaborate costumes. The costumes were truly incredible; They ranged from renaissance outfits to people dressed as Disney characters. It reminded me of Halloween, except without the spooky factor. The floats were also amazing. Many of them looked like they took a lot of work and time to build. There were pirate ships and character themed floats, and many played loud, festive music as they rode along the path. People can be seen dancing, taking photos, and wearing fun costumes of their own as they watch the parade.
I had never seen Viterbo so alive and full of people before Saturday. There was confetti everywhere, thrown by children on the sidelines, shot from cannons on the parade floats, and swirling up off the streets in the wind. I still have confetti in my hair from the festivities. It was really lovely to see that a small town like Viterbo has such a big celebration. It shows that the spirit of carnival spans the entire population. Whether you are attending with friends, by yourself, or with children, the carnivale viterbese is sure to be a lively and fun experience for everyone.
