Elizabeth, day trip around Viterbo

One of the most fun things about living in Viterbo is that there are so many beautiful nearby towns to visit on the weekends. It is always exciting to go to Rome or travel around in general, but is important to explore the area you live in as well and appreciate it while you are there. I have had a lot of fun on small day trips around Viterbo and Lazio. A few weeks ago I took a trip to the town of Bracciano (pictured), which is only a few train stops south of Viterbo and is home to a huge, beautiful lake and a castle. The castle can be toured individually or you can get a guide to take you around, and the view of the lake is incredible from higher points in the town. It’s a great place to walk around or just spend time peacefully taking in the scenery. Another day trip I made recently was to Bagnaia, a small, but lively town accessible by bus or by walking. Bagnaia is home to the garden of Villa Lante (pictured), a Renaissance era garden filled with beautiful intricate hedges and lots of artwork. Also in Bagnaia are many lovely hiking trails to explore. There are trails near Villa lante leading to some clearings and park benches ideal for picnics and relaxing. In the town square, there’s a tall clock tower to see and an excellent gelato shop. A great thing that has come from exploring these towns is that I have gotten much more confident using public transportation. The buses and trains in the area are a great resources and are essential for exploring your city. I encourage others to spend some time traveling locally; You never know what beautiful surprises you might discover. I look forward to making more trips around Viterbo as well as returning to my favorite spots.
